The short version. The Tollbooth app sees which app you open, never what is on your screen. Your flashcards stay in AnkiDroid on your phone. We count anonymous usage so we can improve the app. We have your email only if you give it to us, and you can unsubscribe any time.
Who we are
Tollbooth (the Android app and the website at tollboothapp.com) is operated by Partnership Premier 0a LLC ("we", "us"). Questions about this policy or your data: support@tollboothapp.com.
What the app reads on your phone
- Which app is in front, through Android's Accessibility Service. Tollbooth uses this permission for one thing: to read the package name of the app that comes to the foreground (for example, com.instagram.android), so it can show the toll before that app opens. It does not read screen content, text you type, messages, passwords or anything inside other apps, and it does not record or send the list of apps you open anywhere.
- Your flashcards, through AnkiDroid's API, on the device. Tollbooth asks AnkiDroid for the cards that are due and sends your answers back to AnkiDroid so its own scheduler stays in charge. Your decks and cards are not copied to our servers.
- Settings you choose, such as which apps charge a toll, are stored on your phone.
Features that talk to other services
- Explain. If you tap Explain on a card, Tollbooth opens ChatGPT or Claude (whichever you picked) with the word or card text in the question. That only happens when you tap it, and what happens next is between you and that service under its own privacy policy.
- Listen. If you use Listen with a YouTube video, the app loads that video and its captions directly from YouTube. Google's privacy policy applies to that request.
Analytics
The app and this website send anonymous usage events to PostHog (for example, "the toll was shown", "a page was viewed", "a button was tapped") so we can see what works and fix what does not. These events are tied to a random identifier, not to your name or email. We do not send card content, the list of apps you open, or your email address to analytics. On the website, PostHog stores that random identifier in your browser's local storage; session recording and automatic click capture are turned off.
Purchases
Pro is bought inside the app through Google Play. Google processes the payment; we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to check that a purchase is valid and to unlock Pro, which means RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt and an anonymous app user identifier. Google's and RevenueCat's privacy policies apply to their part.
We have your email address only if you give it to us, on this website or in the app. We use it for the weekly Toll Receipt and for launch and price news about Tollbooth, sent through an email service provider. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us at support@tollboothapp.com to remove your address. We do not sell or rent it.
This website
The site is hosted on Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) to run and protect the service. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google to fetch them. Apart from the PostHog identifier above, the site sets no tracking cookies and runs no advertising.
What we never do
- Read your screen, messages or passwords.
- Sell your data or use it for advertising.
- Upload your flashcards.
Your choices and rights
You can turn off the Accessibility permission or uninstall the app at any time, which stops all reading of the foreground app. You can unsubscribe from email in one tap. You can ask us to access or delete the data we hold about you (your email, and analytics linked to your identifier where we can find it) by writing to support@tollboothapp.com. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under local law, and we will honor them.
Children
Tollbooth is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will say so in the app or by email.
